Santa Aloi Bio
Santa is a choreographer, writer, performer
and educator. Originally from New York ,
she received her contemporary dance training there and danced with Gus
Solomons Jr. Over the course of her career, she has created more than
sixty original dance works including: Finding My Way: A Tale in
Taps, Tango Solitario, That Light and Dark did not Clash, Yeats, and
The Moon and the Tower. Aloi has been a featured Artist in
Residence in Canada, the United States, China
and France . In London
, Aloi directed Transitions Dance Company at the Laban
Center and toured
with them throughout Europe and Asia
. In 1976, Aloi moved to Canada
where she accepted a position as a Professor at Simon
Fraser University
. She was a founding member of the School for Contemporary
Arts and with Iris Garland established the Dance Major Program at the
University.
Class Description
Technique classes are based in Cunningham technique
and informed by other somatic disciplines aimed at improving alignment,
developing core strength, and release. Classwork emphasizes a
refined use of the spine, moving from the centre, spatial awareness,
musicality and the efficient use of the body, combining technique with
artistry.
