Lee Su-Feh Bio
Su-Feh was born and raised in Malaysia and began performing
while at the National Children's Theatre. Her training includes traditional
Malay, Javanese and Balinese dance as well as contemporary dance and
ballet. She also has extensive training in Chinese martial arts. Before
coming to Vancouver in 1988, she lived in Paris, London, Indonesia and
Malaysia. Her work reflects her constant questioning and search for
a point of balance between the many cultures that influence her. In
1998, she won the Prix de Jeune Auteur of the Rencontres Choregraphiques
Internationales de Seine-St.Denis for her work Gecko Eats Fly. In theatre,
Su-Feh has worked as a choreographer with directors such as Marc Diamond,
Donna Spencer and most recently DD Kugler. In 1995, she co-founded Battery
Opera with David McIntosh, an award-winning company whose work offers a view of the contemporary body as a site of intersecting and displaced cultures, histories and practices.. In addition
to performing and choreographing, Su-Feh studies and teaches Chinese
martial arts as well as movement for dancers and actors. She is also
a certified journeyman pastry chef. For more info visit: www.batteryopera.com
Class Description
Approaching dance through martial arts. Vigorous, demanding,
fun, this is a class that uses martial arts as a starting point to explore
ideas about movement, space, mind-body connection and partnering/ensemble
skills. The class pulls exercises from Qigong, Yoga, and Wushu. Using principles from internal martial arts - spiralling and circular energies, clarity of intention, softness of body - this class gets you to move with speed, focus and clarity within a released body. Sometimes the class takes on a very somatic approach and is very free-form, at other times the class will follow the basic drill structure of martial arts and technique class.
