Artistic Director of Toronto Dance Theatre since 1994, Christopher House is one of Canada’s most respected choreographers. He has transformed TDT into a company known internationally for its fresh, intelligent and provocative dance.
Born and raised in St. John’s, Newfoundland, House began his dance studies with Elizabeth Langley in Ottawa and Nikki Cole and Alfredo Corvino in New York. He graduated from the University of Ottawa with a degree in political science in 1976, and from York University with a B.F.A. (Hons.) in 1979. Christopher House joined TDT as a dancer in 1979 and has subsequently created roles for choreographers Sarah Chase, Peter Chin, David Earle, James Kudelka and Peter Randazzo. He has also been featured as a guest artist with Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal and with Peggy Baker Dance Projects.
Resident Choreographer of TDT since, 1981, House has contributed over fifty works to the repertoire including Glass Houses, Four Towers, Early Departures, Vena Cava, Nest, Persephone’s Lunch and Sly Verb. He has also created choreographies for companies such as Portugal’s Ballet Gulbenkian, the National Ballet of Canada, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montreal and Ballet British Columbia. A highly respected teacher, his credits include The School of Toronto Dance Theatre (where he serves as Artistic Advisor), Simon Fraser University, The Julliard School, the National Ballet School, The Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival and the Rotterdam Dansacademie.
Recent works include Echo’s Object for TDT and In the Boneyard, his second collaboration with Joel Gibb and The Hidden Cameras. His latest work, Timecode Break, had its world premiere at the Canada Dance Festival in June 2006.
Christopher will teach a classic contemporary movement class consisting of a modern barre, centre work and grand allegro with live accompaniment. House's work is motivated by a profound curiosity about art and life. He brings his exceptional expertise as a renowned dancer, choreographer and movement innovator to every class, pushing dancers to reach for their best and stretch their limits.
