Chick Snipper, BA, MSW, Diploma in Performing Arts, has been studying, practicing and teaching in a variety of physical training forms and hands-on healing work to groups and individuals for over 25 years. Her unique approach is based in stress reduction techniques that strengthen the body’s core, while enhancing its alignment, natural impulses and internal connections. These include training in several modern dance styles, Pilates, Hatha yoga, Alexander, small ball and release work, passive stretch, visualization and pressure point techniques.

She has been developing and teaching her own interpretation of modern dance styles and related physical practices for many years. She recently formed her own company Functional Fitness to train and motivate individuals who wish to develop an intelligent and well rounded physical practice, in the privacy of their own home. Chick is on faculty at Studio 58, Western Canada’s recognized theatre training school where she teaches movement, alignment and scene work. She is Artistic Director of the Vancouver-based dance company DSB.

She has choreographed and directed over 45 dance and interdisciplinary projects and has toured her work to Nanaimo, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton & Toronto. Chick recently showed Chrysalis at the 2004 Canada Dance Festiva in Ottawa where it was acclaimed by both audiences and critics. She has also been commissioned by several Canadian companies and individual artists to create new dances. In 2004 Chick received the prestigious inaugural Isadora Award for Excellence in Choreography from the Vancouver Scotiabank Dance Centre. Chick writes and directs in film and video and has recently formed a film company, MotherLode Productions, with writer Louise Bentall, who also manages DSB.

CLASS DESCRIPTION

This class will benefit all levels of dancers who wish to get in touch with their bodies through a variety of physical forms, with particular emphasis on theories and techniques practised in yoga, Pilates and released based modern dance. Chick has developed this approach to class through her training of actors – encouraging them to be connected, committed, courageous and aware,. It will focus on alignment and placement, core strength, simple patterning and sequencing as well as active stillness. The class will promote healthy balance in the body as it is taken through a series of exercises, postures and repeatable movements. The participants will be encouraged to deepen the breath and quiet the mind. The dancer will discover how to embody a physicality that encourages expansiveness, openness, strength, length and softness. The overall effect will be a heightened awareness in the body’s sensations and the mind’s responses. The overall intention will be to create an environment where all of us can discover joy in the simple and ease in the more complex. The overall impression will be that repetition is the doorway to imagination and detail the window to the whole. YOGA MATS OPTIONAL (for people with slippery feet).
